Energy storage batteries

What is battery energy storage?

Battery storage, or battery energy storage systems (BESS), are devices that allow energy from renewable sources, such as the sun and wind, to be stored and then fed into the grid when the power is needed most.

Lithium-ion batteries, which are used in mobile phones and electric vehicles, are currently the leading storage technology in large power plants, helping power grids ensure a reliable supply of renewable energy.

Energy storage batteries work differently from the regular batteries we have at home. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are much more complex.

The main stages of work

Charging

The system can be charged with electricity generated from renewable sources such as the sun and wind.

Intelligent software

Special software with algorithms monitors energy production and decides when to store excess energy, as well as when to feed it back into the power grid.

Optimized Feed-in

The system feeds stored energy to the grid during peak demand, thereby helping to reduce costs and ensure a stable electricity supply.

How exactly does a battery energy storage system work?

Lithium-ion batteries, which are used in mobile phones and electric cars, are currently the leading storage technology in large power plants, helping power grids ensure a reliable supply of renewable energy.
Energy storage batteries work differently than the regular batteries we have at home. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are much more complex and rely on a combination of hardware and software to store and release energy from renewable sources such as the sun and wind.

This cycle of charging, managing and discharging allows BESS to play a key role in integrating renewable energy into the grid, smoothing out fluctuations and ensuring a reliable supply of electricity.

Charging

  • During periods of high renewable energy generation, excess electricity is directed to the BESS.
  • This electricity flows into multiple batteries, similar to how you would charge a large battery.

Energy Conversion

  • Unlike household batteries that store electricity in direct current (DC), BESSs use AC/DC converters.
  • Incoming AC electricity is converted to DC for efficient storage in the battery.

Discharge

  • When electricity demand is high or renewable generation is low, the BMS triggers the BESS to switch from charging mode to discharging mode.
  • The DC electricity stored in the batteries is converted back to AC using inverters and fed back into the electricity distribution grid.

WHAT

Energy Storage System is made Of?

PCS
PCS is a bidirectional AC/DC device that can convert electrical current from alternating (AC) to direct (DC) and vice versa. Its main function is to convert AC to DC to charge the battery and DC to AC to supply electricity to the grid.

BATTERY SYSTEM
Batteries are the heart of the system. The main technology used is lithium iron phosphate cells. They are more stable compared to other types of lithium batteries and have a higher efficiency.
BMS
Ensures safety and optimized operation of the batteries. Monitors parameters such as temperature, current, voltage, charge/discharge and balances the battery cells for longer life.

EMS
Hardware-software system that continuously monitors and analyzes the operation of the entire storage system to optimize efficiency.

ELECTRICAL PANEL
The electrical panel is specially designed to manage the flow of electricity between the SSE, the electricity distribution network and consumers.
